If Mercury-Amalgam fillings are not removed responsibly, toxic mercury gas can not only be
inhaled by the patient, but also by the dentist and dental nurse involved in the procedure.
The preparation for this procedure involves a nasal mask to allow the patient to breathe
oxygen during the procedure, a ‘rubber dam’ (vinyl sheet) is placed over the teeth to be
treated, this will isolate them from the rest of the patient’s mouth. A suction vacuum will
rapidly remove the debris from the old fillings, while a separate vacuum will suck away and
filter any vapour containing mercury gas and other toxins from the air. Disposable surgical
material will be used to cover the patient’s body while the procedure takes place to avoid
any contamination to the patient’s skin and clothing.

Patient preparation
Prior to having Mercury-Amalgam fillings removed here are some precautions that the
patient can take to minimize their exposure to mercury

Vitamin C
The mercury in amalgam fillings binds to vitamin C in the blood more readily than it binds to
body tissues.
It is recommended for the patient to take 5,000 – 10,000 mg for three days before
treatment, finishing 24 hours before the removal of amalgam fillings, and to continue the
dosage for two days after the amalgam filling has been removed.
Garlic
Mercury has an attraction to the sulphur contained in raw garlic, and this helps to remove
any mercury from the body via the bowels.
It is recommended for the patient to eat raw garlic twenty-four hours before the removal of
amalgam fillings.

Green leafy vegetables
Green leafy vegetables naturally contain chlorophyll, which has a strong attraction to the
mercury in amalgam fillings, and helps to remove mercury from the body via the bowels.
The patient is advised to eat plenty of green leafy vegetables before and after the removal
of amalgam fillings.
Water
To help with removing mercury residues from the body, the patient is required to drink
plenty of water before and after the removal of amalgam fillings.
Avoid Seafood
Many varieties of seafoods contain mercury. To prevent higher levels of mercury in the body
it is suggested that the patient avoids eating any seafood for three days before, and 2 days
after amalgam removal.
